When they enter these rest periods, they do not fall asleep in the same way that most animals do. Great white sharks do not have eyelids and will keep their eyes open as they enter their resting periods. WebSome great white sharks have been observed to engage in tonic immobility, a state of paralysis where the shark appears to be asleep, but it is not technically sleeping. This is often induced by flipping the shark onto its back, which triggers a reflex response known as “tonic immobility.”
